The Gauteng Department of Health and Social Development has put in place plans to have medical waste removed from all its hospitals this week after succeeding in having waste removed from Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic and Chris Hani Hospitals.
Waste was cleared from Charlotte Maxeke on Monday while removal from Chris Hani started on Saturday.
The department was today making arrangements to have medical waste removed from Dr George Mukhari and Steve Biko Pretoria Academic Hospitals. It is hoped that waste will be cleared from these institutions by the end of this week.
The MEC for Health and Social Development Qedani Mahlangu has assured members of the public, patients and staff that the department is doing everything in its power to have the situation resolved as soon as possible.
“The department is committed to paying service providers and we urge them to bear with us while we try to find a solution to our cash flow situation,” the MEC said.
