The Department of Environmental Affairs, yesterday, Tuesday, 21 June 2011, at 17h00, cancelled the medical evacuation voyage of the Africana vessel to Marion Island.
The vessel was recalled three hours into the 12 to 14 day trip after the SA Military Health Services (SAMHS) withdrew its original recommendation for an urgent medical evacuation of a member of the team at the research base on Marion Island.
The SAMHS has advised the department that the medic on ground has indicated that the patient is now responding favourably to further treatment and thus there is no need for a medical evacuation.
The vessel returned to port in Cape Town last night.
