The Minister of Social Development, Mrs Edna Molewa, and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), Mr Fezile Makiwane, have mutually agreed on Mr Makiwane taking special leave pending an investigation into alleged irregularities.
This follows a probe by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) into alleged misuse of funds managed by pay point service providers at SASSA. Subsequent to that the Minister informed Mr Makiwane of possible disciplinary measures against him.
"We will follow up the allegations made by the SIU, and I applaud the CEO for excusing himself from all aspects of the organisation to ensure the smooth running of the probe. It is important to note that no one has been found guilty of any misconduct at this point, so Mr Makiwane is innocent until proven otherwise," Minister Molewa said.
Mr Makiwane's leave began yesterday, 15 July 2009.
The process to appoint an Acting CEO has commenced, and Minister Molewa will make an announcement shortly. The acting CEO will lead the team that will oversee the investigation.
