Media statement by the Speaker of the North West Legislature, Honourable Supra Mahumapelo on the sitting of the Legislature

Greetings,

Part of the mandate of the Legislature is to hold the executive accountable and to play an over side role in the execution of their public mandate. We just come out from one of the session to ensure that accountability is ensured.

In this session we had the tabling of the tabling of the Legislature Annual Report 2012/2013; the Office of the Premier Annual Report 2012/13, and the entire provincial government department tabling their 2012/2013 Annual Reports. The sitting went very well and portfolio committees will hold meeting with different government departments and their entities regarding the report today. The Office of the AG will brief all the Portfolio Committees about the audit outcomes of the financial year 2012/2013.

As the Office of Speaker of the North West Legislature, two months ago we launched the Reconciliation, Healing and Renewal programme, an initiative which symbolise a new beginning for the North West Province.

Through the Reconciliation, Healing and Renewal programme, we acknowledge and appreciate the challenges we face as a province. As the Office of the Speaker having observed and studied the developmental patterns of our province since the advent of democracy, we concluded that definitely the North West province has the capacity, abilities and the necessary political will to overcome these challenges.

Government alone cannot build a society where basic services are rendered to our people, where no one is hungry, where everyone is able to go to school and where work is available.

The Legislature partnership with civil society is important to ensure that we fight poverty, inequalities and unemployment through the law making capability of the legislature and through government institutions. Together with the people of the North West province holding each other’s hand, we can change our destiny and make the North West a province where we all are proud to live in.

Leadership throughout the province from churches, communities, schools, businesses and across all spheres of government is the driving force of this programme of Reconciliation, Healing and Renewal.

As the Office of the Speaker we have commenced sessions with faith based organisations and we will proceed to have sessions with traditional leaders; non-governmental organisations; the youth; including those who are born in the North West province but currently working in other provinces, the disabled and business.

This will ensure that we all participate in the rebuilding of our province to make it one of the best in our country. A detailed programme of all these consultative meetings will be shared publicly.

On the issue regarding the usage of the state credit card has been responded to the Mail and Guardian newspaper enquiry a month ago. For the detailed response, I will refer you to the statement issued in this regard.
