Media statement by Premier Maureen Modiselle at the ABSA Premier’s Invitational held at the Rustenburg Golf Club

Ladies and gentlemen of the media, first and foremost, I would like to thank ABSA for inviting the provincial government to be part of this important annual event.

To those who may see the sport as dull and boring, rest assured that golf is actually a phenomenal sport for health purposes.

It is indeed a great honour to be part of this memorable day.

It is a humbling experience to see such participation by the private sector in partnering government to ensure that we continue to build public and private partnerships aimed at improving the lives of the majority of our people.

The ABSA Premier Invitational Golf Day is a continuation of the long-standing partnerships between us and ABSA. This is a continuation of opportunities to network and share ideas regarding how we, together, can face the socio-economic challenges confronting our province and country in light of the current global economic meltdown.

We believe that as we participate in the 2009 ABSA Premier’s Invitational, we can form strategic relationships in the various areas of nation building.

This year’s Golf Day should be geared towards creating an environment that is caring and nurturing, and conducive to developing talents of our most disadvantaged young people.

It gives me great joy to announce that ABSA is donating R250 000 today towards socio-economic upliftment of the impoverished in our province.

I want to express my sincerest appreciation, on behalf of the North West provincial government, to every sponsor, golfer and non-golfer, who has come here purely to participate in this year’s Golf Day by event.

We would like to assure, at this juncture, the ABSA management and staff that the donation made by your organisation in support of learning, will go contribute to further opening the doors of learning and culture to our people.

I thank you and wish you all a pleasant day.
