Media Statement from the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS)

As election fever sweeps through the country, the law enforcement and security environment can once again assure our communities that all security plans and law enforcement officials are in place.

The Directors-General of the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster are liaising directly and meeting regularly with the partner-departments of the NATJOINTS which includes, inter alia, the South African Police Service, the South African National Defence Force, the multi-disciplinary intelligence committee, the Independent Electoral Commission and the Metro Police Department. This hands-on approach ensures that the Ministers of the JCPS Cluster are fully briefed on all developments and that the hotspot areas already visited by the Cluster are being closely monitored.

As part of the planning for the General Election, additional national deployments were made in certain areas of the country.

Members of the the South African Police Service's well trained National Intervention Unit (NIU) were part of these deployments and they have achieved significant crime-fighting successes. Yesterday, Monday 5 May 2014, the following arrests were made by the NIU while performing vehicle and foot patrols, suspect tracking and stop-and-search operations:

  • Gelvandale, Eastern Cape: Two men, both 30 years-of-age, were arrested on murder charges. Five empty .38 cartridges, one .38 live round and four holsters were confiscated;
  • Gelvandale, Eastern Cape: One male, 38 years-of-age, was arrested for attempted murder;
  • Greytown, KwaZulu-Natal: One man was arrested for being in possession of illegal firearms and ammunition. One AK47 with 10 rounds of ammunition, one pistol with eight rounds of ammunition and one revolver with three rounds of ammunition were seized;
  • Cape Town, Western Cape: One man was arrested for possession of tik and seven packets of tik were confiscated.

These are just a few of the successes our members are reporting from their deployments around the country.

In advance, we thank all members of the security forces, law enforcement agencies,Electoral Commission (IEC) officials and emergency services personnel who will be on duty tomorrow to keep South Africans safe at the voting stations and in the communities.
