Media statement by the Ministries of Higher Education and Training and Health on the issue of University of Limpopo's Medical University of South Africa (Medunsa)

We have been inundated with queries from media and other stakeholders following statements made yesterday at the University of Limpopo’s Medical University of South Africa (Medunsa).

The background to this matter is that both the African National Congress (ANC) and government have been dealing with the merger of Medunsa with the University of Limpopo for several years as a consequence of concerns about the perceived negative impact of merger on the training of health professionals. Last month, the top officials of the ANC, led by the deputy president, were briefed on the matter by the ministers.

Arising out of all these engagements and discussions, there is agreement between the Departments of Health and Higher Education and Training that a task team composed of people from both the departments look into a range of issues around Medunsa including that of the merger.

We have been communicating with the Chairperson of Council and the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Limpopo about our intention to appoint the task team. We will release the terms of reference for the work of the task team in the next few weeks.

The leadership of the ANC is fully aware of the progress that has been made on this matter. In the meantime, teaching and learning should proceed as normal at the campus. We are aiming to conclude the matter sooner rather than later to provide stability at the campus and in the health professions sector.
