Media Statement by the Ministerial Enquiry on Nomzamo (Lwandle) evictions

The Ministerial Enquiry on Nomzamo (Lwandle) evictions closed the first round of its oral presentations as planned with the number of Entities/Institutions appearing before the members of the Enquiry.

The Entities/Institutions that have appeared before the members of the Enquiry to give oral presentations include the National Department of Human Settlements; Housing Development Agency (HDA), Mr Tim Flack (an eye witness who was present when the first evictions in Nomzamo took place).

Access to Justice Association of Southern Africa; Ses’Khona People’s Rights Movement; Sobahlangula Social Investment Project (SSIP) and Nomzamo (Lwandle) Ward Councillor (85) - Mr Mbuyiselo Matha; the Sheriff and SANRAL have also appeared before the Enquiry.

However, the City of Cape Town and the Provincial Department of Human Settlements chose not to turn up for oral presentations. The City of Cape Town did submit a detailed written document concerning their role in the subject matter under discussion.

As previously communicated, public hearings will adjourn as from today and reconvene next week in a place and date to be confirmed.

On Wednesday and Thursday this week, members of the Enquiry will proceed to Nomzamo (Lwandle) to obtain written statements from the members of the community who were directly affected by the evictions.
