Media Statement: Minister urges all South Africans to observe International Children's Day

As South Africa joins United Nations member states from all over the world in the observance of the International Children's Day, the Minister of Social Development, Edna Molewa is calling on all South African to observe this day.

The International Children's Day follows in the heels of yet another successful national Child Protection Week, a campaign that encourages government, civil society organisations and the general public to promote children’s rights. Our government strongly believes that community involvement is a key to the protection of children.

I would like to thank this opportunity to thank all non-governmental organisations and individuals who took part in various activities throughput the week to make the campaign a huge success. Together we must work together to stop the abuse of children because the protection of children is a national concern that has a significant impact on the future of our country, said the Minister.

Established in 1954 by the United Nations General Assembly, the International Children's Day is observed worldwide to promote the welfare of the world's children. As a signatory to United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), the South African government has passed various pieces of legislation which guarantee children’s rights to care, protection, education and socio-economic rights.
