Media statement of the Minister of Sport and Recreation South Africa, Mr Fikile Mbalula, MP, on the killing of supermodel Reeva Steenkamp

Fellow South Africans, Oscar Pistorius is appearing before the Judge in the Pretoria Magistrate Court on allegations of murder of Ms Steenkamp. It is our disbelief that these events are obviously taking place against the backdrop of increasing incidents of violence and abuse against woman in South Africa.

Our nation is still shocked by the events of 14 February 2013. Many questions are being asked; but we have no answers. We will only get answers when our capable Criminal Justice System (CJS) concludes its work. The process is now entirely in the hands of our capable and dedicated Criminal Justice System. Indeed, the law must take its cause. We strongly believe that no one is above the law.

We once again shocked because none of our sporting heroes and heroines should be associated with such acts of violence against woman and children in our society. We live in a world where we seek to build role models who can be exemplary to our society and youth. For that Oscar has been our torch bearer and an international icon who stood against human rights abuses.

We therefore call on every citizen to uphold the principles of our Constitutional Democracy and Jurisprudence. We want to re-iterate that ‘no one is above the law and we call on our people to uphold the principle of presumption of innocence until proven otherwise by the court of law’.

Today, Reeva will be laid to rest. May her soul rest in peace!

Thank you.
