The Department of Defence and Military Veterans would like to warn the public about a scam that has surfaced in Mpumalanga province involving candidates who have applied to join the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). The perpetrators of the scam invite the public to deposit into unnamed bank account amounts of between one hundred and three hundred rand (R100 and R300), with the promise of getting employment in the SANDF through its Military Skills Development System (MSDS).
As a result of this fraud, the department has had to cancel a selection process for invited candidates, which was scheduled for 5 to 9 October 2009, at Nelspruit in Mpumalanga. Qualifying candidates were informed as such as well as about the new dates.
The department would like to inform the public that it does not cost money to join the SANDF. Members of the public are urged to report to the police any person or persons who solicit money from them with the promise of a job in the SANDF.
