Media statement on the Limpopo Provincial Government Executive Council (Exco) meeting of 15 March 2012

Yesterday on 15 March 2012, the Limpopo provincial government held a special Executive Council (EXCO) meeting to, amongst others, officially welcome the new Members of the EXCO (MECs). The meeting presented the applicable protocols and procedures that guide the operations of MECs as part of standard procedure during the welcome. The new members joined EXCO recently after Premier Cassel Mathale strengthened the provincial EXCO in line with the provisions of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.

This arrangement saw the following new members joining the departments spelt out below:

  • Agriculture - MEC Jacob Marule
  • Safety, Security and Liaison - MEC Florence Dzhobere
  • Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs - MEC Clifford Motsepe
  • Health and Social Development - MEC Norman Mabasa.

Added to this, the following members who have always been part of EXCO have been redeployed to other departments as indicated below:

The MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, Mr Pitsi Moloto is now responsible for the Department of Roads and Transport while at the same time MEC Pinkie Kekana is now the MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism.

The MEC for Agriculture, Me Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba is now responsible for the department of Sport, Arts and Culture and the MECs for other departments that include Provincial Treasury, Public Works and Education continue to serve in their respective departments.

EXCO also appreciated the contribution of former MEC for CoGHSTA, Mr Soviet Lekganyane, former MEC for Health and Social Development, Me Dikeledi Magadzi and former MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Me Joyce Mashamba for their sterling contribution towards government’s efforts to create a better life.

The former MECs referred to above will no more serve the people of Limpopo in their official capacity as MECs and EXCO has wished them well in their future pursuits in nation building.

The meeting also considered the report by the Public Protector. This report is on the outcomes of an investigation into allegations of improper conduct by Me Mirriam Segabutla, the former MEC for Health and Social Development in Limpopo. The allegations referred to above relate to the procurement of services for the Limpopo department of Health.

This report was presented by Premier Cassel Mathale to EXCO in compliance with the remedial action the report said must be taken to ensure that all members of EXCO are made aware of its contents and are sensitised about compliance with the provisions of section 136 of the Constitution and the Executive Ethics Code, within 30 days from the date of the report.
