Media statement issued by the Department of Energy on the adjustment of fuel prices effective from 2 July 2014

The Department of Energy herewith informs the public about the fuel prices for July 2014. South Africa’s fuel prices are adjusted on a monthly basis, informed by international and local factors.

All petroleum products prices will increase with effect from 2 July 2014. The increase in the prices of all the petroleum products is due to changes in international factors, namely, crude oil prices, the Rand/ Dollar exchange rate and the prices of finished products. The Rand depreciated against the US Dollar from $10.40 to $10.68 during the period under review.

Furthermore, the crude oil price increased on average during the period under review and climbed to their highest level since September last year. The crude oil price peaked at above 115 US Dollars per barrel on 19 June 2014, which led to increase in the prices of petrol, diesel, illuminating paraffin and Liquefied Petroleum Gas in the international markets.

Based on current local and international factors, the fuel prices for July 2014 in the South African market will be adjusted as follows:

1. Diesel will increase by 14.0 cents/ litre
2. Illuminating paraffin (SMNRP) will increase by 31.0 cents/litre
3. Petrol (93 ULP and LRP) will increase by 29.0 cents/litre.
4. Petrol (95 ULP and LRP) will increase by 31.0 cents/litre.
5. Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) will increase by 58.0 cents/kilogram

The  pricing  schedule  for  all  the  pricing  zones  will  be  published  on Tuesday, 1 July 2014.

The Department of Energy would like to urge all motorists to continue implementing fuel efficiency measures, such as using public transport and utilising lift clubs whenever possible to ensure that they save fuel.
