Media Statement on Human Trafficking and Gender Based Violence Road Show Campaign

The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) in collaboration with C9’s, SAPS, men’s sector and other civil society organisations will be embarking on a road show campaign that seeks to raise awareness about human trafficking, gender based violence within Buffalo City Municipality. The road show will be targeting the following areas, High way taxi rank in Mdatsane, Gompo, Zipunzane, Boxer Taxi Rank, West Bank and lastly Marine Glan (known as Ubuhlanti) and Quigney.

One of the primary objectives of the road show is to raise awareness to the public about human trafficking as well as to educate the public and inform them on issues such as gender based violence in particular men who are most perpetrators of gender based violence hence our focus will be on taxi ranks and areas where there are commercial sex workers whom at most time are victims of abuse either from the security agencies or men.

Moreover the campaign seeks to identify possible strategies that could assist those children that are force to be commercial sex workers without their consent. Mdantsane is one of the areas that has a high incidents of rapes and domestic violence in the country hence it was necessary for the organisers of the road show to target it as one to the areas to be visited during the campaign.

Overall goals for the road show campaign

  • To harness the capacity of stakeholders and partnerships within civil society and government.
  • To create awareness on Human Trafficking and Gender based violence.
  • To sensitive the public on the mandate of the CGE and other role players to combating gender based violence and Human Trafficking
