Media statement on Executive Council (EXCO) meeting

The Executive Council (EXCO) of the Limpopo Provincial Government held its monthly meeting yesterday on 30 March 2011. This was the last meeting of EXCO in the 2010/11 financial year and it was held at the time when the provincial government departments are about to conclude the process of tabling departmental budget vote speeches in the provincial legislature at Lebowakgomo.

EXCO appreciated that the budget vote speeches of various departments which have already been delivered resonate well with government’s call to make 2011 the year of job creation.

EXCO noted the following reports:

  • The Office of the Premier confirmed that the Premier’s Hotline will start to operate on 7 April 2011. The Premier’s Hotline is designed to assist the members of the public to, among others, get information about government services and programmes, report problems or complain about service delivery matters and share views or provide solutions to challenges confronting their communities.
  • Progress report presented by the department of Local Government and Housing on the Lephalale Human Settlement Project. The report provided a summary of activities that will be carried out in the implementation of the Scoping Project with regard to spatial development, infrastructure requirements, operational capacity requirements and funding strategies to raise the required capital.

EXCO has approved the proposed name change by the Department of Local Government and Housing to the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs subject to the approval by the Department of Public Service and Administration and the Presidency.

This change was necessitated by the new configuration at national level following the 2009 elections that led to the change of name of the Department of Provincial and Local Government to Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, and the Department of Housing to Department of Human Settlements. The approved name change also accommodates the unit of Traditional Affairs that was transferred from the Office of the Premier to the Department of Local Government and Housing.

EXCO approved the appointment of Mr Mamitwa Hoshane Noel as the Deputy Traditional Leader of Valoyi Traditional Community in terms of Section 16(1) c of the Limpopo Traditional Leadership and Institute Act.

It was announced that the Limpopo provincial administration will host a meeting for the Social Development Minister and Members of the Executive Council (MECs) responsible for Social Development in all the provinces in the Republic of South Africa scheduled to be held from 31 March to 1 April 2011.

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture will embark on a series of activities across the province to mark the celebration of April as Freedom Month.

The meeting was reminded that the department of Safety, Security and Liaison and the department of Sport, Arts and Culture would table their budget vote speeches on 31 March 2011 and the department of Local Government and Housing will deliver its budget vote speech on 1 April 2011.

The meeting welcomed the preparations made for the EXCO Public Participation Programme which is scheduled to be held on Saturday, 2 April 2011 at the Sekgosese village at Greater Letaba municipality in Mopani district.
