The draft updated IRP report was placed on the Department of Energy website on Friday, 25 November 2013, to solicit written public comments before it is ultimately promulgated by March 2014 as outlined in the process below. It is important to understand that the IRP is a living document that needs regular update; as such this report is a draft that emanates from the modelling of various scenarios informed by changes in the assumptions that were made in IRP2010.
Presentations on the output from the modelled IRP scenarios took place in conjunction with the workshops on the Draft Integrated Energy Plan which started on 25 September 2013 in Johannesburg. This is therefore not the final updated IRP report, because public inputs and final policy positions that government will adopt after step 3 below are yet to be incorporated.
In order to give the public more opportunity to make written inputs, the Department of Energy has published the draft report on the web portal www.doe-irp.co.za with a link accessible from www.energy.gov.za.
We are now at step 2 in the process, and the draft is still liable to change as a consequence of stakeholder inputs in step 3 and the policy adjustment process in step 4 which remains the prerogative of government. In order to proceed to step 3, the public are invited to submit their comments up to 7 February 2014.
