Media statement on the appointment of the members of the South African Law Reform Commission

President Jacob Zuma has appointed five members of the South African Law Reform Commission (SALRC), following his earlier announcement that he had, on 19 July 2013, appointed the Honourable Judge Mandisa Maya as the Chairperson, and the Honourable Judge Jody Kollapen as its Vice Chairperson, for a period of five years.

The President is pleased to announce that the following persons have now been appointed, for a period of five years, as members of the Commission:

(i) Professor Pamela Schwikkard
(ii) Professor Vinodh Jaichand
(iii) Advocate Mahlape Sello
(iv) Mr Irvin Lawrence and
(v) Ms Namhla Siwendu.

The SALRC is a statutory body established in terms of the South African Law Reform Commission Act, 1973 (Act No. 19 of 1973).

Professor Schwikkard and Adv Sello Mahlape are both returning members of the South African Law Reform Commission, and both bring with them a wealth of experience and knowledge. Professor Schwikkard is the Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Cape Town. Adv Mahlape is a practising advocate at the Johannesburg Bar.

Professor Jaichand is Professor and Head of School at School of Law, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

Mr Irvin Lawrence is a practising attorney and Director at Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs.

Ms Siwendu is a practising attorney and the Founding Partner and CEO of Thina Siwendu & Associates.

The field of experience of the members range from human rights law, administrative law and corporate governance law.

The object of the SALRC is to do research with reference to all branches of the law of South Africa and to study and investigate the law in order to make recommendations for the development and improvement of the law. The work of the SALRC includes making recommendations for the repeal of obsolete and unnecessary provisions in the law and generally to bring about uniformity in the law.

"We wish the members of the South African Law Reform Commission well in this critical endeavour in the service of our democracy and Constitution,” President Zuma said.
