Special Investigating Unit to submit a final report in August 2009 on the investigation commissioned by Correctional Services into multi-million rand tenders.
The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has given Acting National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Ms. Jennifer Schreiner an assurance that a final report on its three year investigation into multi-million rand tenders will be submitted in August 2009. The investigation was commissioned by Correctional Services in March 2006.
SIU Head Mr Willie Hofmeyer accompanied by the Acting Project Director briefed the Ms Schreiner in Pretoria yesterday, 22 July 2009, on progress made in the investigation. The investigations covered major tenders entered into by the department including the nutrition, CCTV security, fencing and television monitors tenders that amounted to over R1,6 billion.
The meeting also reflected on a number of critical elements of the fight against fraud and corruption including disciplinary actions and criminal investigations against officials fingered by the probe. The meeting also discussed possible areas for future cooperation between the SIU and the Department of Correctional Services. The team is expected to also brief Minister of Correctional Services Ms Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula as soon as the report is finalised.
