Media Statement

Monday marks the start of the 2010 matric examinations where thousands of Grade 12 learners across the country will be writing what is probably the most important examination in their schooling lives. On behalf of the People of the Eastern Cape as well as the Executive Council leading the Provincial Government, I would like to wish them all the best in their examinations.

One is aware that 2010 has been a rollercoaster year that has seen many activities that might have impacted negatively in their schooling programme; however that cannot deter us from calling upon you to commit yourselves to getting the best possible results.

It has always been through difficult and challenging times that the world has seen heroes emerge and I am quite certain that the crop of 2010 matrics will also surprise us with this year’s examination outcomes.

As the Eastern Cape Provincial Government, we are aware that we need to accelerate our own Provincial efforts towards the development and empowerment of our youth so that those who are writing their examinations from next week can enjoy the fruits of living in a democratic state.

Our struggle icon the first President of the democratic South Africa, Dr Nelson Mandela once said: “Education is a great engine to personal development. It is through education that a daughter of the peasant can become a doctor, that the son of a mine worker can become the head of the mine that the child of farm workers can become the president of a great nation. It is what we make out of what we have not what we are given that separates one person from another.”

I hope that you will find those words inspiring for you to take your task of passing your matric examinations seriously and as Gandhi had envisioned you will “be the change that you want to see” taking South Africa forward to assert itself as one of the leading nations in the global community.
