This morning, members of the community came out in huge numbers at Krugersdorp Magistrate Court after Gauteng MEC for Health and Social Development, Qedani Mahlangu, called on women organisations, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the general public to gather and oppose bail in the appearance of a suspect accused of raping and killing a six year old girl from Kagiso, West Rand.

This action said MEC Mahlangu would demonstrate public’s outrage at the increasing incidents of child abuse and people with disabilities in the country.

The suspect abandoned his bail application following pressure from angry community members who wanted to see him remain behind bars and far from their children. The suspect has since confessed to the police to committing the crime and he has been remanded in police custody until 10 February, 2010.

In her plea at the weekend, MEC Mahlangu said, “We cannot allow a situation where children continue to suffer abuse. It is high time that society stands up to fight this scourge. The department of Health and Social development will ensure that child abuse and the protection of children and other vulnerable groups in society are prioritised,” said MEC Mahlangu.
