Media statement

The Gauteng Department of Health and Social Development has embarked on measures to arrest the increase in the incidence of diabetes in the province. The measures were announced during the commemoration of the World Diabetes Day held in Tshwane today under the theme: "Understand Diabetes and Take Control".

The measures include among others the intensification of community mobilisation campaigns where there will be public testing and referrals if need arises, collaboration with non-governmental organisations, support groups, faith based organisations, and the private sector to popularise the "Know Your Health Status Campaign" and dissemination of information on how to look after yourself or loved ones if you or they suffer from diabetes.

In Gauteng a total of 15 362 new cases of diabetes were reported in addition to 549 353 patients who are on treatment. In the Tshwane District, 1 517 new patients were put on treatment, in addition to 19 808 patients who are already on treatment.

In Soshanguve alone, 589 new patients were put on treatment last year, in addition to 11 145 patients who are already on treatment. This means that Soshanguve has 56% of diabetes patients in Tshwane! A study that was conducted by the Medical Research Council in 2007, found that the number of South Africans suffering from type two diabetes is expected to double in the next few years.

The study found that 56% of all women and 29% are overweight, while more than 40% of women above the age of 35 are also obese. Diabetes, if not treated, leads to gradual and continuing narrowing of the blood vessels which bring essential nutrients and oxygen to our tissues.

It also affects organs such as the brain leading to death of segments of the brain, usually referred to as the stroke. The department has called on members of the public to lead healthy life style and do regular checkups to prevent diabetes.
