Media Release by Dan Plato, Western Cape MEC of Community Safety: Attack on the police is an attack on the state

It is with a heavy heart that one has to hear the news about another police officer killed in this province. Any acts of violence against our hard working police officers who provide a valuable safety service to our public must be condemned in the strongest possible manner.

I would like to express my sincerest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Constable Thabo Mdzwana and Sergeant Mthunzi Mbonjwa who were fatally shot in two separate incidents earlier this week.

Any Attack on the police is an attack on the state, and this simply cannot be tolerated. I am pleased to see that the police have acted swiftly and already made two arrests in relation to one of the cases.

I will be visiting the officers’ families on Friday, 28 June 2013 with South African Police Service (SAPS) senior management in order to pay my respects and offer the support of the Western Cape Government.
