Media lock-up for the State of the Nation Address.

The Presidency has taken the decision to electronically issue an embargoed State of the Nation Address speech at 18h00, i.e. an hour before the President’s address.  

This means the media lock-up that was announced earlier has been cancelled. Information contained in the speech can only be published/aired once the President starts his address.

President Jacob Zuma will deliver the State of the Nation Address on Thursday, 10February 2011, at 19h00. Journalists will be given access to the speech an hour before the President’s address in a media lock-up under police surveillance.

Leaks during the embargo are taken seriously and those found guilty may face severe consequences. The responsibility to ensure that the embargo is not broken is therefore on journalists and editors. Information contained in the speech can only be published or aired once the President starts his address.

Lock-up arrangements:

Venue: The Imbizo Media Centre
Time: 17h30 sharp

Journalists must confirm their attendance and details by no later than Thursday, 10February 2011 at 10h00. To confirm attendance please e-mail details to Pheliswa Sebati on pheliswa@gcis.gov.za or Edwina Maloy on edwina@gcis.gov.za.

Only accredited media can attend and access will be given to a maximum of two representatives per media house.

Please note:

No communication, i.e. by telephone, e-mail or any other means is allowed during the lock-up.

Journalists should also note the following:

  • Cellphones are to be switched off, placed in an envelope and handed over to GCIS officials.
  • E-mails cannot be sent during the lock-up – 3G cards, iPads and any other mobile device are to be handed over to GCIS officials. Journalists cannot use any device that can send/receive any form of communication.
  •  Nobody will be allowed to leave the lock-up before the embargo is lifted at 19h00.

The lock-up will end when the President starts his address in the National Assembly at 19h00.
