Minister Thembi Simelane briefs media on illegal eviction and unlawful occupation of Land Amendment Bill, 16 Apr

The Minister of Human Settlements, Thembi Simelane, will tomorrow, 16 April 2026, brief the media on the developments and processes regarding the Prevention of Illegal Eviction from and Unlawful Occupation of Land (PIE) Amendment Bill of 2026. This follows the Cabinet’s approval of the Amendment Bill to go for public comments.

PIE Amendment Bill seeks to amend the Prevention of Illegal Eviction from and Unlawful Occupation of Land Act of 1998 (PIE Act) which was enacted to prevent arbitrary evictions and address historical injustices where people were removed from land without due process and violating their human rights.

The proposed amendment to the Act aims to deal with matters related to land invasions, provision of alternative accommodation, court processes and enforcement of court orders, and protection of vulnerable groups. It also seeks to serve as deterrence to criminals.
