Media briefing on funeral arrangements for the late Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang

On behalf of the South African Government, we once more would like to express our sincere condolences to Uncle Mendi and his family on the passing away of Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang.

Details for the memorial service and funeral service of Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang are as follows:

The official memorial service will take place on 21 December, at 15h30 to 17h00, at the Pretoria City Hall. The memorial service will be addressed by Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe.

The funeral will, according to government policy, be a Special Official Funeral. The service will take place on 22 December at the Catholic Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, cnr Bosman and Schoeman Street, Tshwane, starting at 10h00.

In line with the wishes of the late Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, her body will be cremated in a private ceremony, attended by the family and designated VVIPs.

As the family and VVIPs make their way to the crematorium, the rest of the mourners will proceed from the Cathedral to the Pretoria City Hall where they will be later joined by the family for refreshments.

A private night vigil will take place at the home of the family on 21 December, starting at 19h00. The cortege, dressed in the flag of the ANC, will depart the family home at 09h00 and proceed to the Cathedral where the SANDF will take over and drape the coffin in the national flag.
