MEC Yawa welcomes R5 000 fine imposed on N4 speedster

A 31 year old Rustenburg businessman, Quinton De Villiers was on Wednesday slapped with a R5 000 fine after pleading guilty to charges of speeding in the Swartruggens Magistrates Court.

In welcoming the fine imposed by the court, Provincial MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa said that it will serve as a deterrent and a reminder to other motorists of the zero tolerance that his department has adopted towards speeding and reckless driving on public roads.

De Villiers was arrested by the North West Provincial Public Safety traffic officers at a speed operation for clocking 181km/h on a 120 kilometre speeding zone on the N4 Bakwena Platinum Highway during the Easter long weekend.

He was driving an Audi A4 from Rustenburg to Zeerust when he was arrested at a speed operation between Swartruggens and Groot Marico around noon on Saturday, 3 April 2010. He was earlier released on a bail of R2 500.

The provincial department’s Easter long weekend operations had prioritised speed operations in order to reduce road accidents hence the campaign is dubbed Speed to Easter Arrive Alive Campaign.

The campaign realised a 43.47 reduction in road fatalities which translated into reduction of four crashes and 10 deaths during the Easter long weekend as compared to last year.
