North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa at the conclusion of unannounced visit to seven police stations in Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality on Friday night said that there is a need for service delivery to be jerked up at Klerksdorp Police Station.
MEC Yawa found the community service centre at the police station in a dirty state, two police members who were supposed to be on duty at the police station at the time of the visit could not be accounted for. There were over 60 awaiting trial detainees in the holding cells, CCV cameras were out of order and some members were on duty without wearing their bullet proof vests.
By contrast, the MEC and his entourage that included among others the Provincial Commissioner, Lesetja Beetha and the Chief Director for Community Safety in the Department of Public Safety, Bailey Mahlakoleng and members of the monitoring and oversight directorate observed service excellence at Tigane Police Station.
Yawa was also encouraged by the significant improvement in terms of the sobriety of police on duty and compliance with maintenance of registers as per prescripts at Klerksdorp, Tigane, Kanana, Orkney, Stilfontein, Khuma and Jouberton Police Stations and that service delivery during night shifts at most of the police stations were at an acceptable level.
Provincial Commissioner Beetha instructed that some of the awaiting trial detainees at Klerksdorp Police Station be transferred from Klerksdorp to Potchefstroom Police Station to ease overcrowding that was noted in the holding cells.
Meanwhile, MEC Yawa is to take up the need for a new police station in Kanana with the Minister of Police and ratification of latent defects at the newly built Khuma Police Station with the national Department of Public Works.
