MEC Yawa to kickstart campaign for safer environment in Matlosana

In an effort to involve communities in the reduction of opportunities for crime, North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa is to kick-start a Provincial Campaign targeting crime hotspots related to environment design in City of Matlosana Council on Thursday, 11 November 2010.

The Crime Prevention through environment design (CPTED) community mobilisation programme is aimed at eliminating escape routes and hideouts for criminals involved in housebreaking in Alabama Extension 6 in Klerksdorp.

The programme for the event scheduled to commence at 10h00 involves grass cutting and de-bushing to limit opportunities for criminals to utilise access and escape routes through the bush and enhance the ease with which potential victims could find and access escape routes to a safer environment.

The provincial initiative led by the provincial Department of Public Safety is supported by Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality, City of Matlosana Council, the Klerksdorp Cluster and local Community Policing Forum and the South African Police Service (SAPS).

The Letsema campaign is in support of the cabinet approved Local Government turn-around strategy and involves demolition of disused buildings used a hideouts by criminals, clearing of bushes , installation of high- mast lights, replacing street-light globes and reviving of recreational parks.
