North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa says that the arrest of six traffic officers on Monday on allegations of bribery and corruption is part of an intensified effort to rid law enforcement agencies of corrupt elements. The officers’ four of whom are stationed at Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality and two at Rustenburg Local Municipality are expected to appear in the Zeerust and Rustenburg magistrates courts respectively on Wednesday.
MEC Yawa commends Botswana motorists for exposing the despicable conduct of the four traffic officers, two black males, a white male and a female officer who were arrested by the provincial organised crime unit in a sting operation. The officers are alleged to have issued spot fines to foreign nationals which they pocketed for themselves.
MEC Yawa also applauds the Rustenburg motorist who reported the alleged extortion of a R300 bribe by two male traffic officers. The two suspects were arrested after following the motorist to the nearby police station in an attempt to refund the said amount.
“When citizens abhor and take a stand against corruption, it will be uprooted within our law enforcement agencies and in our society,” says Yawa.
