MEC Yawa to encourage police towards fitness

North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa is to deliver the keynote address highlighting the importance of police fitness at the South African Police Services’ (SAPS) National Functional Fitness Championship Gala Function and Prize Awarding Ceremony. The ceremony is to be held at 7:00 pm this evening at Madiba Banquet Halls in Potchefstroom.

The North West has hosted the 2010 SAPS National Fitness Annual Championship at the Kopanelo Military Base in Potchefstroom since Monday, 4 October 2010. The competition includes running through different obstacles, within certain timeframes, usually minutes and in different age and weight categories for both males and females.

The fitness challenge sporting code which was initiated in 2000 is about speed, strength and endurance which are critical in the war against crime. The challenge was held at various provinces, but due to lack of obstacles course training venues, it was held at South African National Defence Force (SANDF) Naval Training Institutitions.

Prize monies for winners are sponsored by ASSUPOL.
