MEC Yawa concerned as road offenders on R503 reach 889

North West MEC for Public Safety Howard Yawa says that the milestone of 889 road offenders brought to book in the past 10 days since the launch of Operation Moretlwa, Die poppe sal dans on the R503 Mafikeng, Lichtenburg road is a matter of grave concern.

'Though we have improved visibility of traffic officers and intensified our road safety awareness programmes, the phenomenon of driver aggression which manifests itself through speeding and a lack of courtesy towards other road users still need to be stamped out,' says MEC Yawa.

421 tickets have thus far been issued to road offenders for speeding as part of the month long operation, 122 other road users were arrested for driving without licenses, 102 for not wearing seat belts, 21 for overtaking on a barrier line and scores of other for worn out tyres, unlicensed vehicles and overloading.

The month long zero tolerance traffic law enforcement operation is a joint effort by the North West Public Safety provincial traffic, South African Police Service, Ditsobotla and Mafikeng local municipalities.
