MEC Wendy Nelson calls for clean governance and unity

Tourism MEC sets tone on clean governance and unity

The MEC for Tourism in the North West Province Wendy Nelson, has called for good governance which will lead to making the province the number one destination of choice. The MEC was speaking during the official back to back meetings with the departmental employees as well as the general staff of the Tourism Board recently. The meetings formed part of the initial and direct interaction with the MEC.

According to MEC Nelson, the current period is critical as government has to give feedback on the mandate given to the fifth administration and ensure that the incoming administration is ushered smoothly. “I want to indicate that I have an open door policy, I am open for discussions and would personally make sure that I listen and address all challenges that might be facing the department. I want us to work side by side to ensure that we deliver on our mandate given by the electorate.

“I want to urge you to assist me in implementing government policies, by making sure that we follow due procedures and processes. Together we implement the programmes which incidentally have been put in place already and mine is to ensure that those programmes speak to government policies”, stated MEC Nelson as she highlighted on the importance of good governance.

The MEC requested corporation and hard work in the department and the board to ensure that tourism in the province reaches greater heights.

“The tourism industry is critical to our economy. We must continue to create an enabling environment for the industry to thrive and attract more people to the province, by growing the economy we will be creating jobs and further delivering on our mandate.

“This is also a good time to talk about our achievements and sell the good things that we have done and not only look at our challenges. I want to thank you for the work that you have done in past year and for however long you have been in the industry because without you I do not think we would be where we are today”, MEC Nelson added.

All employees of the department as well as its entity from across the province welcomed the MEC with an undertaking of working as a close unit while providing her with the necessary support.

Prior to joining the Tourism Department, Wendy Nelson served as MEC for Finance Economy and Enterprise Development (FEED) from May 2014 to December 2018. She served in the National Assembly during the period of 2009 and 2014 in the Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) portfolio, where she served as the Whip for the Committee as well as the Governance cluster.

Nelson also has an extensive background in Local Government- having served as a Member of the Mayoral Committee from 2000- 2006 in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality and subsequently becoming the Speaker at the same district municipality between 2006 and 2009.
