MEC Vusi Shongwe on Mpumalanga MEC's Excellence Awards Ceremony

Machadodorp named the best Police Station in Mpumalanga

Nkangala Region’s Machadodorp Police Station has been named the Overall Best Police Station in the province at yesterday’s annual MEC’s Excellence Awards Ceremony hosted by Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe.

The awards, which saw the province’s 86 police stations taking part, were a recognition of excellence displayed by police stations for the financial year 2012/13.

The MEC’s Excellence Awards are presented every year by the department to best performing stations in the province after conducting a thorough evaluation exercise involving departmental officials and members of the Community Police Forums (CPFs).

Machadodorp Station also came out tops in categories such as Best Station Managed by Captain to Lieutenant Colonel, the Station with the best functioning CPF.

Mhala Police Station in Bushbuckridge Municipality received accolades as the Best Station managed by Colonel and higher. The station became runners up in the category Best Overall Station in the province.

Speaking after the awards, Machadodorp Police Station Commander, Lieutenant Sikhumbuzo Thela said that he attributed the station success to team work and dedication by the station’s personnel and support that he is receiving from the community. He said the station would not have made it without the involvement of the community in its various crime prevention projects in Machadodorp.

“We are grateful for the community’s support in all our initiatives to combat crime and many thanks to our CPF members for always going an extra mile to be there for the station,” Thela said.

Speaking at the same event, Shongwe said that it was important for other South African Police Service (SAPS) members to also learn from individuals like Thela and comply with the SAPS Code of Conduct and Ethics, which prescribes and emphasises the importance of ethical behaviour and integrity for all employees.

Shongwe said that only disciplined members are needed in the police service and he called on those who are doing the opposite to freely leave the service before they are removed. He explained that those who are not upholding high levels of morality and integrity tarnish the good work of those who are working hard to bring an end to criminality in communities.

“We cannot accommodate laziness, slow delivery of services and a poor sense of urgency that robs our people of decent services. Our commitment towards ensuring that all South African are secured and feel safe in their homes, their places of work and their communities and in their own streets cannot be over emphasised,” the MEC said.
