MEC visits families of ten deceased youth

North West MEC for Social Development, Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities, Mosetsanagape Mokemele-Mothibi, today visited the families of the ten youths who sadly passed away following an alleged stampede that occurred on New Year’s Eve at a tavern in Ipelegeng township outside Schweizer-Reneke.

MEC Mokomele-Mothibi was accompanied by MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Mr Patrick Chauke as well as members of Parliament, Ms Wendy Makgati and Ms Masego Mafora.

Also present was the Mayor of Mamusa Local Municipality, Mr Kenneth Tshipelo. MEC Mokomele-Mothibi told the bereaved families that the tragic loss of life that has affected them is also a loss for the province and the country in general.

She also said that the Department of Social Development, Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities will be sending in social workers as soon as possible to further assess the needs of the affected families as well as recommend the forms of interventions necessary.

The MEC also told the bereaved families that the department will hand over food parcels early as the first form of intervention because most of them are destitute.

MEC Mokomele-Mothibi also met with community leaders who have formed a committee to assist the families of the deceased at a meeting that was held at the Mamusa Local Municipality offices.
