MEC Violet Mathye sends condolences following serious accident on N1

The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety is deeply saddened to confirm a serious motor vehicle accident on N1-25 next to Boekenhout, Waterberg District, at 07H45 this morning, 1 April 2026.

MEC Violet Mathye has expressed shock and extends her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of the 5 people who lost their lives. "We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives in this tragic accident. Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who have passed away," said MEC Mathye.

The accident involved three vehicles: a Renault light motor vehicle making a U-turn on the freeway, causing a head-on collision with a Ford light delivery vehicle and a Toyota light delivery vehicle.

The status of those involved:

  • 5 people have died (2 male drivers and 3 occupants from one of the vehicles)
  • 2 passengers are seriously injured

All patients were transported to FH Odendaal Hospital.

"The possible cause of the accident is reckless driving, potentially due to a drunken driver. We urge all road users to take responsibility for their safety and the safety of others," said MEC Mathye.

MEC Mathye wishes a speedy recovery to those injured and reiterates the importance of road safety.
