MEC Vadi holds session with Intelligent Number Plate (INP) embossers

In an effort to improve broad-based consultation before the introduction of the revolutionary Intelligent Number Plates (INPs) in the province, MEC Vadi held a meeting with INP embossers to outline regulatory requirements and other concerns regarding the project. The gathering took place on 18 November 2010 in Pretoria.

The MEC gave a report on the current status of the project and the requirements ahead of the launch. He also reiterated the need for regulatory compliance as this may cause problems for motorists in the future.

The launch of the number plates is necessitated by, amongst others, the easy manipulation and duplication of current plates as well as posing a security risk. Other reasons include the point that current plates cannot be effectively policed, false plates and license discs are being used on stolen vehicles to commit crimes, having no effective control in issuing number plates, high numbers of cloned and non compliant plates as well as loss of revenue due to ineffective vehicle identification.

Two hundred and eighty embosser representatives from around the province were in attendance. Furthermore, the Department will undertake extensive communication campaign to inform and educate motorists of the benefits and advantages of the intelligent number plates.
