With less than fifteen days remaining before the actual counting of all South Africans begins, the North West MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development Mr. Boitumelo Tshwene says it is critical for farmers across the province to ensure that everybody within their respective farms get enumerated.
Tshwene says it remains the responsibility of government and its stakeholders to ensure that the outcome of this third census in democratic South Africa is reflective of the country’s real population.
He says for this census to be successful, everyone within the borders of South Africa must be counted.
“Statistics South Africa has confirmed that an undercount was experienced during the previous two censuses, and we need to avoid a situation whereby the farming communities become part of those not counted, since this will have serious implications on our future planning.
I therefore call on all farmers within the North West province to allow enumerators easy access to their farms, and also request employers to encourage their employees to make themselves available for this worthwhile exercise”, urged Tshwene.
Additionally, MEC Tshwene encourages the farming communities to respond objectively to the questionnaires because their information will contribute towards helping government and the private sector in the planning of developmental initiatives, as well as evaluation and monitoring of programmes and policies.
The last census was conducted in 2001, and for this year, the counting will start from 10th till the 31st of October 2011.
