MEC: Tribute to educators on World Teacher’s Day

Theme: “Teaching is the mother of all Professions”

On behalf of learners and the people of the North West Province, we join the
international world and the South African Council of Educators (SACE) in particular, in extending our special appreciation to all educators. Those that have passed on, retired, currently teaching and indeed those that are being trained to become future teachers. This recognition happens during the October month which is popularly known as the teachers’ month. Educators remain fundamental to changing lives of young innocent children placed under their care in varying and trying circumstances. The objective is to ensure that learners are provided with quality education.

In the spirit of our vision “A portrait of Excellence” and commitment to the “Quality Learning and Teaching Campaign” we urge communities, business, teacher unions and officials to continue ensuring that educators operate in a conducive environment, receive continuous quality support and embrace life-long learning. Educators are encouraged to continue striving for quality learner performance at all times.

Indeed, “Teaching is the mother of all professions” and therefore each teacher is an asset to the Nation. Each moment in a life of every teacher matters, because each child matters. We thank, motivate and encourage teachers to serve selflessly as part of ensuring social cohesion, economic growth and sustaining democracy.

Against the backdrop of research and the recently published ANA result, the levels of literacy and numeracy have dropped to unacceptable levels. It should come as every educators concern, if the Nations children cannot read, write and count.

I challenge all educators to rise to the occasion and confront societal stereotypes who sometimes blame policy change for the non-performance of the system. There should not be any confusion as to whether you are compliant to this or that policy position: Teach them how to read, write and count.

We salute your efforts.
