MEC supports families of Moloto road crash victims

On hearing of the accident and death of bus commuters on Moloto Road in Pretoria, MEC Nkosi visited the families of victims of the crash. The accident happened on 26 November 2009 near the Cullinan off-ramp when a bus crashed head-on with an oncoming truck.

The fatal accident claimed the lives of ten passengers and left two critically injured and 36 with minor injuries. Those injured were rushed to Montana Clinic and the Steve Biko Academic Hospital for medical attention.

The accident occurred when two buses travelling in the same direction came across a stationary bus, which led the bus in front to slow down causing the other bus not to have enough time to slow down due to the distance between the buses. The second bus tried to evade the other one in front by swerving to the right hand side of the road to avoid hitting it in front, which led the bus colliding head-on with an oncoming truck.

As a result of this tragic accident and in support of the Arrive Alive campaign, MEC Nkosi is appealing to motorists to be vigilant and to obey the rules of the road at all times, particularly during the festive season. He is also pleading with drivers to avoid high speeds, to have enough rest and not to drink and drive as these have been proven to contribute to increase in accidents and therefore fatalities on the roads.
