MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane condemns shooting of police in Alexandra

Three police officers injured in a shooting incident in Alexandra

The Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, condemns with strongest possible terms the shooting and stabbing incident in Alexandra where three police officers including a Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officer were wounded.

Two South African Police Service (SAPS) detectives went to a house of an assault incident suspect in Alexandra to make an arrest. On their arrival the suspect stabbed one of the detectives, disarm him and shot his partner. The wounded officers managed to call back up. When back up arrive, the suspect started shooting, injuring one SAPS officer and a JMPD officer. The suspect then shot himself and died on the scene. The three wounded officer were taken to hospital for medical attention where they are in a stable condition.

“I congratulate the dedicated officers who managed to corner the suspect and stop him on his tracks. This demonstrates our zeal to crack down any criminality that poses a threat to the lives of men and women in blue. In the past three months, the Gauteng City Region has lost six law enforcement officers. Their passing is not in vain and it would not weaken the morale of our police force but will instead encourage them to do even more to continue to protect and serve our communities and this was proven today.

Any threat to the lives of our law enforcement officers will be met with an even more force. This will send a strong message to the would be perpetrators that such atrocities cannot be tolerated in our country. On behalf of the Gauteng Provincial Government I would like to wish the injured officers a speedy recovery,” said MEC Nkosi-Malobane.
