MEC Shongwe urges motorists to practice patience to avoid further accidents

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC, Vusi Shongwe urges motorists to be patient when driving to avoid accidents on the road.

This comes after twelve people died in sixteen separate accidents in the province occurred over the weekend. Shongwe said some of the factors that contributed to accidents was lack of patience in drivers which resulted in speeding, reckless driving and overtaking unnecessarily.

"It is unfortunate that these accidents happened right after we have launched our Arrive Alive Easter campaign with the aim of keeping our roads safe,"said the MEC. He said that the department remains highly concerned about the number of accidents that usually characterises this season hence officers will be deployed on every road including in the townships.

Meanwhile, the MEC has praised the traffic intervention unit for arresting 25 drunk drivers over the weekend in Ermelo. He warned drivers that more arrests will be made if they continued to misbehave on the roads as road blocks will be staged throughout the province during the campaign.

Four other people were arrested including two for reckless driving and two for driving without driving license. During the operation, 83 fines were issued for different violations including speeding while 15 notices for discontinuing vehicles were issued.
