Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe has yesterday, 25 February 2013 donated over 500 textbooks to Jandrell and Khunjuliwe Secondary Schools in Standerton.
These are some of the schools that the MEC on behalf of the department has adopted.
Accompanied by the Executive Mayor Lekwa Municipality Matshidiso Morajane, Shongwe said that education was one of government’s priorities and the future of the country lies in the youth.
He added that this was also part of the department’s School Safety Programme to ensure safety in schools hence providing necessary resources to keep learners at schools.
“I have previously raised concerns about loitering learners, this is my contribution to ensure that learning and teaching is improved in our schools,” said Shongwe.
The schools’ principals thanked the MEC for the support to the schools and promised that the schools will improve their grade 12 pass results to at least 80 percent.
Meanwhile, the MEC requested the Executive Mayor, Councilors and officials of the department to give support to Vuyisile Khumalo (14) a Khunjuliwe Secondary school grade 8 learner, who was adopted by the MEC.
The orphaned Vuyisile was adopted by Shongwe last year on the 3rd of December during his poverty alleviation programme in Holomdeni farm.
Shongwe has also assisted a 16 year old bed ridden Thabang Tsotetsi who will soon undergo an operation in KwaZulu-Natal through the assistance of the Provincial Director General Dr Nonhlanhla Mkhize.
Thabang has been bed ridden for five years now since he fell ill in 2008, he has also not been able to go to school due to his illness.
