MEC Shongwe calls for public transport operators to ensure roadworthiness of their vehicles

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe calls on public transport operators to ensure that vehicles are roadworthy as traffic volume is expected to increase due to closure of schools and Innibos Cultural Festival.

According to Shongwe this will contribute towards avoiding unnecessary accidents associated with public transport as many people use public transport to reach their various destinations safely.

The MEC has urged public transport operators not to place profits above human lives by ensuring that their vehicles are in good condition and that they do not overload as this poses a serious threat to the well being of the passengers.

He has also called on all motorists who will be coming to the province including Innibos Cultural Festival goers that is due to be held in Nelspruit to ensure that they obey traffic rules and regulations in order to save lives.

He said law enforcement agencies will clamp down on motorist who will be found to be drinking and driving or commit any other mischief on our roads.

Shongwe also calls on all motorists to be wary and patient to one another in order to ensure that all holidaymakers arrive at their destinations safely.

He says traffic officers will be deployed in all the regions in order to reduce incidences of lawlessness and non compliance on the part of motorists.

“As a department, we will continue with our programmes aimed at educating our road users about road safety.

“We urge parents to look after their children, especially the young ones not to play near busy roads. We have experienced a huge rise in the statistics of accidents involving pedestrians,” said Shongwe.

He also appeals to the youth to take care of themselves and avoid getting on the wrong side of the law, emphasising the point that they also need to stay away from alcohol and drugs during these holidays.
