Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe has assisted traffic officers to arrest a man who was driving under the influence of alcohol on Friday, 20 April 2012 at 21h00. The arrest took place 20 km to Carolina from Machadodorp when a bakkie nearly collided head-on with the MEC’s official vehicle.
The driver of the bakkie was stopped and the MEC immediately called traffic officers operating in Carolina to come to the scene. The driver was arrested after breathalyser and blood results showed that he was over the limit.
The driver was released after paying a R500 bail on Saturday and will on Wednesday, 25 April 2012 appear in court. MEC Shongwe says it is a responsibility of everyone to ensure safety on the roads by reporting any form of reckless driving.
"Traffic officers can only succeed with the assistance of people who will not turn a blind eye to traffic offenders. These are the drivers who are contributing to road accidents on the road and Government campaigns will only yield positive results if people change their behaviour towards road safety," said the MEC.
He said that he will make sure that this driver faces the law to send a message to other traffic offenders.
