MEC Sebegoe on the administration of Bakubung Ba-Ratheo

In an endeavour to find amicable solutions for the community of Ledig (5 KM from Sun City) to allow for the administration of Bakubung Ba-Ratheo traditional council to properly function, the North West MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Paul Sebegoe has recommended amongst others that an administrator be appointed in terms of the provisions of section 10(3) (a) of the North West Traditional Leadership and Governance Act 2 of 2005.

He said that in order for the provincial government to have unlimited access in Bakubung Ba-Ratheo’s traditional council administration, an administrator will have to be brought in to bring about stability and facilitate government’s intervention based on relevant terms of reference as per issues raised by the community.

MEC Sebegoe highlighted that “Through recommendations of the Royal family, the Premier may, if satisfied that a traditional council is unable to perform the functions assigned to it in terms of the Act in an efficient and effective manner or in a manner which is conducive to good governance and administration, appoint any person deem fit to assist the traditional council concerned to perform the functions assigned to such traditional council’’.

MEC Sebegoe further recommended that an interim committee consisting of both community members and members of the royal family be put in place to work with the recommended administrator to seek solutions on other outstanding matters such as the election of the new traditional council and the issues surrounding section 21 companies established by the dissolved traditional council.

However, members of the Ledig community did not seem to accept MEC’s proposals and called for the release of suspects arrested following recent incidents of violence which erupted due to allegations of corruption and maladministration against the dissolved traditional council. “Once they are released, we will call the MEC again to make his proposal and allow for all community members to choose their preferred representative in the interim committee”, an angry community member said.

The next MEC’s engagement with the community of Ledig is set to take place during first week of December.
