MEC Seaparo Sekoati on poor performing municipalities

The MEC for the Limpopo Provincial Treasury Mr Seaparo Sekoati has called on the municipalities in Limpopo to plan differently to break the cycle of poor performance and poor spending of equitable share.

MEC Sekoati together with the MEC for CoGHSTA Mr Basikopo Makamu were chairing the MUNMEC (Municipal and Members of Executive Committee) meeting in Polokwane today. The meeting is the last provincial MUNMEC of the current financial year and has
been attended by the executive mayors, mayors, HODs and municipal managers amongst others.

Some municipalities across the province where found to be below 30% performance and MEC Sekoati says consequence and accountability sessions on all these municipalities with poor spending and performance should be convened.

He has indicated that poor spending does not only lead to loss of allocated money, but it is a loss of an opportunity to develop the province. “all municipalities must bring in their efforts to improve the province, start planning differently to avoid economic implications of losing resources that should be augmenting what we already have. “said MEC Sekoati.

MEC Sekoati says political leaders should be involved in planning and not leave everything to officials, further indicating the importance of forward planning of multi-year programmes.

He further indicated that municipalities should be able to respond urgently to community needs and avoid community unrests.

Following the presentations and discussions of the recent auditor general reports on municipalities, MEC Sekoati emphasized that there should be a legal consequence management and a sense of accountability for every government document that is lost.
The MEC also called on municipalities to avoid consistent use of consultants in preparation of AG submissions, where it has proven not to yield any improved audit opinion.

MEC Sekoati also advised municipalities that are not doing well to consult with those that have improved and good audit opinion.
