MEC for Safety in Eastern Cape condemns police killings

MEC responsible for Human settlements, Safety and Liaison Helen Sauls-August has condemned the killing of two police men within a week in the province. August was reacting to the news of death by armed criminals of yet another police on Monday in Willowvale. 

Constable Xolisa Somana, 32 from Centane was shot dead as he and a colleague were after suspects who allegedly robbed others of their cell phones in Willowvale on Monday. His death comes a few days after another police officer, Mawethu Siganga was fatally shot in a gun battle with a gang in Ngqeleni last Wednesday.

"The loss of a police life is a set back in our fight against crime and leave our communities vulnerable to criminals. We call on police officer to always protect themselves when confronting gun wielding criminals," she said.

August sent her deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the slain cops. "These dedicated cops died in the line of duty, but at this moment we bow our heads with their families as we mourn their tragic deaths." She called on speedy arrest of the suspects.
