Families whose homes were recently damaged by hailstorms in Kanana Extension five, near Klerksdorp will soon receive assistance from the Department of Human Settlements. This follows a visit by the North West MEC for Human Settlements, Ms Desbo Mohono to the area over the weekend.
Accompanied by the Executive Mayor of Matlosana Local Municipality, Ofentse Mogale, the MEC assured affected families that her department will do whatever it takes to ensure that their houses are rebuilt so that they could return to their houses as soon as possible. After inspecting affected houses, Mohono expressed concern at what appeared to be shoddy work by the contractors. Mohono has already ordered building inspectors to conduct an urgent quality assessment of the houses to enable government to hold the responsible contractor accountable.
MEC Mohono has urged all beneficiaries of government' housing programme to ensure that they play an active part in the construction of their own houses so that they could be able to monitor the quality of their own houses from beginning up to completion stage. She advised residents against allowing themselves to become passive recipients of government services.
