MEC reinstates suspended Tshwane Councillor

An investigation initiated by Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements and Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Jacob Mamabolo to probe allegations of misconduct against a Tshwane Ward Councillor following a protracted legal process has been concluded. Councillor Solomon Phiri was facing dismissal after allegations that he disrupted Ward Committee elections in ward 102 about two years ago thereby violating the prescribed Code of Conduct for Councillors.

The report recommends that the Councillor be suspended instead of removal. After considering the report MEC Mamabolo also endorsed the suspension recommendations, however with slight amendments.

“I am of the view that the period of suspension should be six (6) months instead of three. The six (6) months suspension is suspended for a period of six (6) months on the terms recommended by the investigator. I endorse the investigation and believe that this will have the appropriate deterrent effect.”

MEC Mamabolo also announced that Councillor Phiri should resume work with immediate effect stating that “the relationship between the parties is not irretrievably damaged”.

“The parties were in disagreement based on the Ward Committee elections processes and procedure, on which there was later a judgment, and which system I intend, in any event, to review,” added MEC Mamabolo.

MEC Mamabolo is expecting Councillor Phiri to resume his duties immediately upon receipt of letter of reinstatement. Moreover MEC is expected to hold a facilitation meeting with the City of Tshwane and Councillor Phiri.
