The Gauteng Health MEC, Ms Qedani Mahlangu, has applauded Leratong Regional Hospital’s Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department for winning the first prize in the Department of Public Service and Administration 13th Annual Centre for Public Service Innovation (CPSI) Awards held last week.
The CPSI awards aim to promote and encourage best practices in the public sector innovation and celebrate the successes of individuals and teams in all spheres of government. The hospital’s Obstetrics and Gynaecology unit One Stop Shop Project won in the Innovative Service Delivery institutions category, which had 18 finalists among 500 entries. The One Stop Shop Project was initiated with an aim to improve services by reducing unnecessary waiting time for patients seen at the Gynaecology Outpatient Department (GOPD).
The interventions included developing new procedures, training medical officers in trans-vaginal sonography and refining communication with all key stakeholders, especially patients. One of the benefits of the new system is that 98 percent of sonars are conducted in the GOPD, resulting in less patients waiting to be booked for sonars through the Radiology Department.
MEC Mahlangu commended the team and said they represent the best in the public service. “I would like to congratulate Dr Francios Lubbe, head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department and his team for winning this award. The interventions they implemented have improved service delivery, and thereby improving the quality of life for our people. This team represents a group of unsung heroes in our facilities that work tirelessly to better the lives of those they serve.”
Dr Lubbe said he was humbled by the award and hopes it will set the tone for better things to come. “When I was interviewed for the position of HOD in 2013, I said I would do my best to make Leratong Hospital’s Obs & Gynae Department the best in Gauteng. I sincerely hope this award will serve as an incentive to achieve even higher levels in the future. Thank you to my CEO, and the team.”
